“Ruins of Belarus” is a collection that tells the story of our edifices. At one time, every building in Belarus was under threat of destruction - wars, negligence, state violence destroyed castles and churches, town halls and Cathrics, synagogues and civil houses. Many of them disappeared without a trace on earth, but remained in photographs. There are also those that were saved. They create our environment, embody the history of our past. Others continue to crumble and require our help so as not to disappear completely. In the photographs, we also see people related to these buildings. Some are photographed against the background of ruins because they want to touch the noble past or preserve the memory of places they love, while others mock the ruined cities where they came as occupiers. Thus, the photographs tell us about the fragility of the world, where yesterday's unshakable wall lies beneath our feet, but also about the strength of memory, when, through oblivion and neglect, people return to the stones of their homeland.
“Руіны Беларусі” - калекцыя, якая распавядае аб лёсе нашых камяніц. У свой час усе будовы Беларусі былі пад пагрозай знішчэння - войны, нядбайнасць, дзяржаўны гвалт руйнавалі замкі і касцёлы, ратушы і цэрквы, сінагогі і хаты. Мноства іх знікла без следу на зямлі, але засталося на фотаздымках. Ёсць і выратаваныя, яны ствараюць нашае асяроддзе, увасабляюць гісторыю даўніны. Іншыя працягваюць разбурацца і патрабуюць нашай дапамогі, каб не знікнуць канчаткова. На фотаздымках мы бачым і людзей, да гэтых камяніц датычных. Адны фатаграфуюцца на тле руін, бо хочуць дакрануцца да высакароднай даўніны ці захаваць памяць аб мілых мясцінах, а другія здзекуюцца са зруйнаваных гарадоў, куды прыйшлі як акупанты. Так фотаздымкі распавядаюць нам і пра крохкасць свету, дзе ўчорашні непахісны мур ляжыць пад нагамі, але і пра трываласць памяці, калі праз забыццё і занядбанне людзі вяртаюцца да камянёў сваёй Радзімы.
PEOPLE OF THE FOREST

Photos of people in a connection with the forest. The heroes of the pictures climb the trees, hug their trunks or just sit picturesquely in their shade. For a traditional society forest was the most important source of resource, but also a place of repose and inspiration, a hiding place in case of danger. The state's approach to the forest is exclusively pragmatic, the result of which is, among other things, man-made disasters that caused significant damage to the Belarusian forest. At the same time average citizens, city-inhebitents did not lose their respect for the forest. An important dimension of Belarusian life is still the protective and resource function of the forest, the new thing is ecological concern for it.
Фотаздымкі людзей у прасторы лесу. Героі здымкаў забіраюцца на дрэвы, абдымаюць іх стаўбуры ці маляўніча сядзяць у лясной засені. Для традыцыйнага грамадства лес быў важнейшай крыніцай рэсурсаў, але і вытокам адпачынку і натхнення, хованкай ад небяспекі. Дзяржаўны падыход да лесу выключна прагматычны, вынікам чаго з'яўляюцца, апроч іншага, тэхнагенныя катастрофы, што нанеслі значныя страты беларускаму лесу. Пры тым шараговыя грамадзяне і пераехаўшы ў гарады не страцілі павагі да лесу. Важным вымярэннем беларускага жыцця па-ранейшаму зʼяўляюцца ахоўная і рэсурсная функцыя лесу, новым – экалагічная турбота аб ім.
THE LAST PHOTO

Funeral photoraphy is a genre nearly extinct. Modern style of life in Belarus has no place for death in its everyday rutine. But it was much harder to hide it in a traditional way of life. Nor was it desirable since a human death was seen as a transition of a person from one state to another, same as in another rite of passage - a wedding. It is a difficult transition with the possibility of getting lost on the way, which will bring grief to both the hero of the transition and everyone around. That’s why the local society gathers to escort a deseased person with rutial words and actions, to protect him or her and themselves. Photographs of funerals are a reflection of family unity and help in times of need. Besides, at the time of the scarse distribution of photography, such a picture could be the only image of a deceased person, the last possible memory.
Пахавальная фатаграфія – амаль зніклы жанр. Сучасны лад жыцця ў Беларусі не мае месца для смерці ў сваёй паўсядзённасці. Але пры традыцыйным ладзе жыцця прыхаваць яе было значна цяжэй. Ды і жадання такога не ўзнікала, бо смерць успрымалася як пераход чалавека з аднаго стану ў іншы, што звязвае яе з іншым абрадам перахода – вяселлем. Гэта цяжкі пераход, звязаны з можнасцю страціцца на шляху, што прынясе гора і герою перахода, і ўсім навокал. Таму ўся грамада збіралася каб адмысловымі дзеяннямі і словамі праводзіць чалавека, абараніць яго і сябе. Фотаздымкі пахаванняў – адлюстраванне сваяцкай еднасці і дапамогі ў час патрэбы. У часы абмежаванага распаўсюду фотатэхнікі такая фатаграфія магла быць адзіным здымкам памёршага чалавека, апошнім успамінам.
GIRLS’ NIGHT

Marriage in traditional culture is perceived as a literal death of the bride, since she “dies” as a member of one household and “reborns” in another, passing from the status of an unmarried girl and daughter to the position of wife and mother-to-be. The attributes of marriage should help the bride in the transition. One of the most important attributes was the wedding wreath, which earlier was woven by the bride's girlfriends from special plants and materials during the "girl's night" on the eve of the wedding, and later the brides themselves bought lace hats or veils in special stores of Soviet Belarus. Thus the evolution of the Belarusian wedding can be traced through the photographs of the collection.
У традыцыйнай культуры вяселле разглядаўся як літаральная смерць нявесты, паколькі яна «памірае» у якасці чальца адной гаспадаркі і «нараджаецца» у другой, пераходзіць ад стану незамужняй дзяўчыны і дачкі ў пазіцыю жонкі і будучай маці. Вясельныя атрыбуты павінны былі дапамагчы нявесце паспяхова перайсці небяспечны перыяд. Адным з важнейшых атрыбутам быў вясельны вянок, які раней плялі сяброўкі нявесты з адмысловых раслінаў і матэрыялаў падчас «дзявочага вечара» напярэдадні пабрання, а пазней нявесты самі набывалі карункавыя капелюшы ці вэлюмы ў адмысловых крамах савецкай Беларусі. The collection of portraits photographed against the background of hand-woven carpets tells us about the images of beauty and well-being in the minds of the villagers of Belarus in the 1920s-50s. The works of traveling photographers imitate a studio photo with the help of decorative homemade fabric, but also allow in the frame details that are impossible in a photo studio like house logs or an object of pride - a bicycle. Conceived as a neutral background, the bedspreads and rugs prove to be an important source of knowledge about the local weavers.
Калекцыя партрэтаў, сфатаграфаваных на фоне саматканых дываноў распавядае нам аб вобразах прыгажосці і дабрабыту ва ўяўленнях вясковых жыхароў Беларусі ў 1920-50-я гады. Творы вандроўных фатографаў імітуюць студыйны фотаздымак з дапамогай дэкаратыўнай самаробнай тканіны, але дапускаюць у кадр і дэталі, немагчымыя ў фотаатэлье – ад бярвення хаты да прадмета гонару – ровара. Посцілкі і дываны, задуманыя як нейтральны фон, аказваюцца важнай крыніцай ведаў аб мясцовым ткаллі.
